The complement system is a complex of protective proteins that, during the immune response, cause the destruction of the membrane of the attacking pathogenic cell.
Defects in the complement system can be the source of common immunodeficiencies, which manifest, for example, in repeated severe infectious diseases, autoimmune conditions, dermatitis, edema, and kidney dysfunction.
Quantitative determination of the level of key proteins – C3 and C4 components – is used for laboratory diagnostics of the state of the complement system, as well as for monitoring the course of the mentioned diseases.
